New EU guidelines - part of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive - and UK legislation have recently been introduced to help minimise the environmental harm caused by throwing away mobile phones.

In the UK alone, we throw away 15million handsets a year. Fewer than 10 per cent are recycled, with some 100million left to gather dust in people's drawers.

What toxic harm can phones do? Phones discarded in land-fill sites can leak cadmium, lithium and mercury from their batteries into the earth. The phone's printed circuit boards often contain poisonous lead solder, and the casings can give off toxic fumes when incinerated in waste transfer stations.

ShP can help you dispose of the phones in your organisation in an environmentally-friendly way - according to EU guidelines and UK law.
