This week, local company and shrimps sponsor mopay.co.uk will extend its online mobile phone recycling service to partner shop Fylde telecom located on Lancaster’s busy Church Street. The recycling service aims to encourage people from the local area to do their bit for the environment and their wallet by recycling their old mobile phones conveniently in-store for instant cash or Marks & Spencer vouchers.

The launch of the service on Friday June 6th will coincide with the close of UK recycle week running June 2nd – 6th. The partnership aims to recycle over 5,000 mobiles phones from the surrounding area over the next 12 months through the Nokia N-Series and Samsung service centre Fylde telecom shop.

To my knowledge, this is the first dedicated over-the-counter recycling service of its kind to launch in Lancaster, and the fact that we’re launching it during recycle week only makes it even more special. We want to make people aware that their phones have a value and there is another life for them in a developing market. It’s estimated that there are over 50 million mobiles in the UK and we believe that our region could contain at least 10,000 redundant handsets — to recycle at least half of these would be an excellent result.

— Chris Rogerson, Marketing Manager of mopay.co.uk

All mobile phones received through mopay.co.uk are security tested to ensure that they are not stolen and are then reconditioned and shipped overseas to developing markets for reuse — a process that will help reduce our regions carbon footprint and avoid landfill sites where the phones can leak dangerous chemicals that harm the environment.

Ben Wallace, Member of Parliament for Lancaster & Wyre said:

I think that this service is a great idea. Not only will people receive instant cash or vouchers for their phones in-store, but it will also help protect our environment from the hazardous chemicals phones can leak if disposed of in our landfill sites. I would urge people to utilise this service both during and after recycle week.

Users of the service can receive up to £400 in cash or Marks and Spencer vouchers for their old redundant mobile phones depending on their make, model and condition.

During the same week ShP for Charity, mopay’s sister company, will also offer an option for the public to recycle their old mobile phones in an effort to raise funds for local charity CancerCare through recycling drop off points located at Morecambe and Lancaster town halls from June 2nd through to June 6th.

A percentage of all proceeds from phones recycled at these drop off points will go directly to CancerCare who are celebrating 25 years of service this year and have launched their ‘Silver Jubilee Campaign’, hoping to raise an additional £2.1 million. These funds will enable CancerCare to meet the increasing public demand for their services by financing the development of more space at their two centres; Slynedales in Lancaster and the Lakes Centre in Kendal. Every penny raised will go towards this campaign enabling more local people to benefit from CancerCare’s support. Cash will not be offered at these recycling points.

If you want to recycle your old mobile phones to raise funds for CancerCare simply visit either the Lancaster or Morecambe town halls and dispose of your phones in the drop off boxes provided.
